Amid efforts to rescue a drowning man on his honeymoon, looters allegedly stole his belongings, as per the US media and a family fundraiser.
On June 1, Steven Phan, 49, found himself in difficulty while snorkeling off the Hawaiian coast with his newlywed wife. As onlookers stepped in to aid, miscreants purportedly made away with the couple's car, mobile phones, wallets, and clothes.
Good Samaritans managed to bring Phan back to the shore and initiated CPR, which continued until the arrival of medical help. Despite their efforts, Phan succumbed in the hospital.
A GoFundMe initiative has been established to cover Phan's funeral expenses and support his family, raising over $36,000 out of the $40,000 goal by Thursday. The funeral is set to take place next week.
"Steven's sudden loss has left us all shocked, disbelieving, and devastated. He was a true friend and an exceptional husband," read a statement on the fundraising page, emphasizing that the couple had been wedded for a mere three months.
Phan and his wife resided in San Jose, California, and he was employed at Apple in Cupertino, as indicated by his LinkedIn profile and a local NBC News affiliate's report.
Local authorities confirmed an investigation into the incident is still underway.
